Oscar Red Carpet Loves Neutrals, but JLaw and Lupita Still Pop.

I’m baaackkk (again)! One of my favorite nights of the year was last night: the Oscars! And if you know me, you know I love it not only for the red carpet fashion but also because I LOVE film. I spend most of November-February on my couch with a bottle of wine a stack of movies. Not because the winter hinders my desire to walk from bar to bar (well, I guess that’s part of it) but because all the best films of the year are rolling out weekly and it’s the only way to catch up (with wine in hand, of course!).

But being that this is more a fashion directed blog, I’ll leave my Oscar/film reviews for another time and fill your mind with some fashion-isms.

This year’s fashion theme was “Bejeweled Nudes”. Like seriously, why did this red carpet lack so much color!? I was not a fan of the underwhelming color scheme chosen by so many stars. Even the men were aboard that train too! Here’s a couple generic, nothing special cream colored gowns: main.original.466x530-12  main.original.466x530-19

Don’t get me wrong, they all looked beautiful in them… they were just SO boring. Jessica Biel was wearing Chanel, which is always great but not when you look like everyone else. Sorry Kate and Cate. You guys looked fab too but you fell into my boring category (Nobody wants to be there)–except Kate’s plunging neckline.

Camila Alves (wife of Matthew McConaughey) wore blush toned gown as well, but she was STUNNING! Rather than getting lost in all the (lack) of color like many other stars this year, the blush contrasted beautifully with her tan skin and dark hair. Award season’s trendy cape looked even cooler on her since it draped over just one shoulder. Love, love, love!

Kelly Osbourne also went with cream and jewels but added her signature punk-glam to it making me fall in love with her look a thousand times! Her Badgely Mischka column dress was just SO chic. Her sparkly encrusted shawl thing was fucking perfect and coupled with her signature purple locks, I think I died and went to fashion heaven. ALSO, can we just please note her body!?? WOW!!! She looks amazing. Perfect, some would even say.

So in case you didn’t know Olivia Wilde is pregnant. Yeah, I couldn’t tell either thanks to that Valentino gown. But here’s a side view if you’re not convinced.

The following are more women who went with this year’s “Bejeweled Cream” theme. And SOME HOW made it not boring for me. Naomi Watts was stunning in a simple gown that may or may not have been made strictly for her and gorgeous diamonds. Angelina’s gown was also simple (and a little too safe) but she just absolutely glows and looked so beautiful! Penelope also did the blush thing, but like Camila Alves, her skin toned and hair saved her from looking washed out and I appreciated her gown so much more.

I’m not really sure why Lady Gaga was there, but she was wearing real clothes (Atelier Versace) for once and it looked good! (Maybe she read Anna Wintour’s minor jab in March Vogue’s Letter from the Editor?) Hopefully she keeps this Versace spokeswoman thing up! #gagainclothes

Charlize Theron wore an interesting black gown. I loved everything about this Dior gown, except the invisible straps. It didn’t quite have the floating effect. Maybe if the straps were jeweled with diamonds?

Black was also popular this year (see Olivia Wilde and Charlize), especially with the newer stars. Margot Robbie looks gorgeous with her darker locks but her Saint Laurent gown was a little boring, especially after her perfection of a Golden Globes look. Emma Watson’s Vera Wang gown was sporty and chic but underwhelming, while Anne Hathaway lacked so much. Did she realize her chain mail top made her boobs look saggy?

For the boys, Jared Leto, Jason Sudeikis and Leo DiCaprio looked like perfect leading men. All their suits were well tailored and dapper.

Pharrell on the other hand…. I’m so NOT happy. He’s wearing (Lanvin) shorts. On the red carpet. The Academy Awards’ red carpet! I might have forgiven that stupid hat he wore (again) but now I’m not. And I’m sorry, but who is that chick he’s with? Not only is her “tux” awful and those shoes!? I’m not sure she knew she was going to be walking the red carpet because nobody taught her how to stand.

Since I’d like to end on a high note, I’m going to get worst dressed out of the way. Tara Lipinski (!???) and Johnny Weir (!??? x2) looked like a really flamboyant winter wonderland wedding. So many things are wrong with this ensemble. Those sparkle shoes. The wedding dress (if you’re not nominated, never wear a dress this big to the Oscars). I’m pretty sure I see coat tails. And skinny jeans? It was bad. And if Tara Lipinski was invited, then my invitation was definitely lost in the mail….

Now that I got that off my chest… on to the BESTS!

These two gorgeous ladies in blue were also two gorgeous leading ladies! While neither of them won, they were absolutely part of the best dressed look by finally bringing some much needed color to the rainy red carpet. Sandra Bullock is nearly 50 years old and she makes this McQueen ooze with sexy, Hollywood glamour. Amy Adams’ simple Gucci gown was perfectly tailored to her and was perfection.

I don’t know how Lupita N’yongo makes every color so outstanding but she does and I can’t get enough! The cut of the dress isn’t my fave; but she was stunning and poised and I loved it! Apparently this Prada gown was made for her. Lucky girl. I can’t wait for more fashion greatness from her! main.original.466x530-10

Finally. My favorite look of the night! J.Law does it again! She might not have won any awards, but this red Dior gown is a win in its own right. She’s a girl who can rock red (remember her first Oscar gown in 2011?) and I was very happy she chose something bright and sleek. The peplum gown created a gorgeous silhouette. Does anyone else think she looks like Emma Thompson?

There you have it folks! That’s my Oscar red carpet fashion round up!
