While mixing prints seems to be all the rage right now, one trend I have grown to love over the last few seasons is mixing textures. There is something interesting about two very opposite materials and textures coming together in an outfit; maybe it’s the unexpected way leather boots toughen up a dainty silk dress or how a chunky wool sweater fits so comfortably with slim-fit trousers and loafers. So when I saw this fashionista mixing at an LA area H&M, I was drawn to her outfit. she opted for a breezy linen jumpsuit in army green, perfect for battling the persistent summer heat and to keep from looking too G.I.-Jane, she chose this summer’s It-Outerwear, the jean jacket. A heavier jean, like this one from 7 For All Mankind keeps her outfit balanced and hip without adding too much distracting detail. Paired with a simple wedge heel and cool cat-eyed glasses, she kept a rather plain jumpsuit interesting (but not over the top) with her statement pieces.
And with fall approaching, it’s the perfect time to play with contrasting textures and materials. With the weather a little more forgiving than this summer has been, linen shorts and a slouchy cashmere sweater are perfect combination for the autumn season. One of my favorite outfits is a pair of leather shorts with a slouchy, chunky knit sweater and nude flats. The colors are simple and neutral, but the contrast of leather and knit balance each other, mixing edgy and soft perfectly. The slimness of the shorts keeps me from drowning in the oversized sweater, and with a simple color palette, I can afford to glam up with statement rings or a bright lipstick. Sometimes, the details of an outfit are not found in the colors or patterns, but in the materials and stitching creating beautiful textures to complete your ensemble.
